Some sessions come together in the most unexpected ways—and this one is a perfect example.

When Jordan first reached out, it was because his original photographer had canceled last minute (which, unfortunately, happens more often than you’d think). He needed someone he could trust to step in quickly—and I’m so glad he chose me.

From that moment on, the goal was simple: make this proposal unforgettable.

🌅 Planning the Perfect Surprise at Sunset Cliffs

We chose Sunset Cliffs for the proposal—and it couldn’t have been a better setting.

As I always do for engagement and proposal sessions, I arrived an hour early to scout the location:

  • Finding the best lighting

  • Identifying quieter, more private spots

  • Planning positioning for the proposal moment

This preparation is key—especially for surprises where timing and angles matter.

💐 The Proposal Moment

When Jordan and Nikki arrived, we started casually with a few couple photos to keep everything feeling natural.

Then came the moment.

I guided them into a staggered pose:

  • Nikki stepped slightly forward

  • Jordan stepped back

As she turned around…

He was already down on one knee.

Man kneels with a ring box as a smiling woman in a mint dress stands on a seaside cliff by the Sunset Cliffs.

The look on Nikki’s face—pure shock, joy, and emotion all at once.

Moments like that can’t be recreated, and that’s what makes proposal sessions so powerful.

📸 Engagement Session After the “Yes”

After the excitement (and a lot of celebrating), we continued into their engagement session.

This was a full two-hour session, which allowed us to:

  • Explore multiple areas of Sunset Cliffs

  • Capture a variety of backdrops

  • Let them relax and fully enjoy the moment

And honestly, that post-proposal energy? It’s unmatched. Jordan and Nikki were glowing the entire time, and you could feel the love in every frame.

💡 Why Planning Matters for Surprise Proposals

What made this session work so well wasn’t luck—it was intention.

For surprise proposals, I always:

  • Scout the location ahead of time

  • Plan the exact positioning

  • Guide the moment naturally so nothing feels forced

  • Capture both the proposal and the reaction

Because you only get one chance at that moment.

🗣️ Kind Words from Jordan

This is why I do what I do:

"Crystal is absolutely amazing! I just want to say she stepped in at the last minute when I had to switch photographers because of comfort issues with the original choice. Honestly, it was the best decision I could have made. Our surprise engagement photoshoot at Sunset Cliff was made truly special by her. She arrived an hour early to scout the location, identify the best spots, and even suggested areas that would look better. Every photo she sent us turned out beautifully. I highly recommend her for any photography needs. Although we’re from the East Coast, if we ever return to the West Coast and need a photoshoot, I will definitely reach out to Crystal."

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Surprise Proposal Sessions

Can you help plan a surprise proposal?

Yes—this is one of the most important parts. I help with location, timing, positioning, and making sure everything goes smoothly.

How do you keep the proposal a surprise?

We start the session like a normal photoshoot so nothing feels suspicious. Then I guide you into position naturally for the proposal moment.

What is the best time for a proposal at Sunset Cliffs?

Golden hour (before sunset) is ideal for lighting and overall experience.

How long should we book for a proposal session?

I recommend at least 1.5–2 hours so we can capture both the proposal and a full engagement session afterward.

What happens if something goes wrong or timing is off?

That’s exactly why planning and scouting matter. I adjust in real time to make sure the moment still happens seamlessly.

What should we wear?

Neutral tones and soft colors work best—especially for coastal locations like Sunset Cliffs.

🤍 Final Thoughts

Jordan’s situation could have been stressful—but it turned into something truly unforgettable.

From a last-minute change to a perfectly executed proposal, this session was a reminder that the right preparation—and the right photographer—makes all the difference.
