Sometimes the most imperfect conditions create the most perfect photographs.

Man kneels and proposes to a woman on a coastal cliff, holding her hand under a cloudy sky at Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad.

Jordan reached out to me just days before he planned to surprise his soon-to-be fiancée with a proposal and engagement session. Luckily, I happened to have availability, and we quickly started planning his surprise proposal at Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad.

The forecast wasn't exactly giving us picture-perfect Southern California weather. It was overcast, slightly rainy, and sprinkling throughout the session.

But those clouds, the rain, the ocean, and even the waves that nearly soaked us ended up creating one of my favorite proposal sessions to date.

It was raw, romantic, authentic, and absolutely gorgeous.

Planning a Surprise Proposal at Tamarack State Beach

Surprise proposals require a little extra planning because I need to know exactly where my couple will be without making it obvious that I'm waiting for them.

As I typically do for surprise proposal sessions, I arrived about an hour early to scout Tamarack State Beach and determine the best location based on the conditions that day.

Once I found our spot, I sent Jordan my coordinates so he knew exactly where to find me. I also asked him to share his location as they approached so I could be prepared without giving away the surprise.

Jordan had also sent me his Instagram ahead of time, which helped me recognize them as soon as they arrived.

And what a beautiful couple they are.

The Perfect Setup for the Proposal

When they arrived, everything unfolded naturally.

They spent some time looking out at the ocean, and Jordan had brought a Polaroid camera with them. They took turns photographing each other, which ended up creating the perfect setup for what he had planned.

When it was Jordan's turn to take her photograph, he asked her to look out toward the water.

While she was looking at the ocean, he dropped down onto one knee.

And I was ready.

I captured as much of the moment as possible as she turned around and realized what was happening.

The surprise. The emotion. The excitement.

All of it.

Rain, Waves and an Incredible Carlsbad Engagement Session

Then Mother Nature decided to become part of the story.

It started sprinkling.

The waves kept coming farther onto the beach.

At one point, we nearly ended up in the ocean.

Instead of ruining the session, every one of those supposedly imperfect conditions made the photographs even better.

The overcast sky created this beautiful, dramatic backdrop. The movement of the ocean added energy to the photographs. The light rain made everything feel more intimate.

Nothing about the session felt overly staged or perfect—and that's exactly why I love the photographs so much.

They captured the raw, authentic love between this couple, while the elements around them helped bring their story to life.

An Unexpected Second Camera

I brought my husband along with me for this session.

He's not a photographer, but I decided to do something a little different.

I set up one of my cameras with the settings I wanted, handed it to him, and told him to see what he could create.

Meanwhile, in my usual fashion, I photographed just about every moment possible with my main camera.

And when I saw what my husband captured?

Some of the photographs he took are genuinely some of the most beautiful images my eyes have seen.

Having that unexpected second perspective made an already memorable session even more special.

I absolutely adore how this entire gallery came together.

Their Proposal Photos Delivered in Four Days

I delivered Jordan's completed photographs within four days of their Tamarack State Beach proposal.

His response made this session even sweeter:

“Thank you so much!! The pictures look absolutely incredible. You and your husband were amazing!! We will definitely keep you in mind for the wedding!!”

There isn't much more a photographer could ask for.

Tips for Planning a Surprise Beach Proposal in San Diego

Share a Photo of Yourselves With Your Photographer

For a true surprise proposal, your photographer needs to recognize you before you recognize them. Sending a recent photo or social media profile ahead of time can make that much easier.

Share Your Locations

For my surprise proposal sessions, location sharing helps me know when you're approaching so I can be in position and ready to photograph the moment without drawing attention to myself.

Have a Natural Reason for Stopping

Jordan's Polaroid camera was perfect.

Taking photographs of each other gave them a completely natural reason to stop, face the ocean, and get into position without making the proposal feel staged.

Don't Automatically Fear an Overcast Day

Sunshine is beautiful, but it isn't the only weather that creates beautiful photographs.

Clouds can create softer light and a dramatic sky, and this session is a perfect example of why I don't believe every beach session needs a bright sunset to be gorgeous.

Embrace What Happens

We had clouds. We had sprinkles. We had waves chasing us up the beach.

And I wouldn't change those things.

Sometimes the unexpected elements are exactly what make your photographs feel different from everyone else's.

Frequently Asked Questions About Surprise Proposal Photography

Do you photograph surprise proposals in Carlsbad?

Yes. I photograph surprise proposals and engagement sessions in Carlsbad, San Diego, and throughout Southern California.

Is Tamarack State Beach good for proposal photos?

Tamarack State Beach offers a beautiful coastal setting for couples who want the ocean incorporated into their proposal and engagement photographs. Conditions can vary, so I scout the area before surprise sessions to determine where I want the proposal to happen.

How do you know where we'll be during a surprise proposal?

We coordinate everything beforehand. For Jordan's proposal, I arrived early, sent him my coordinates, and had him share his location as they approached. Every proposal is different, but the goal is to make sure I'm ready without giving away the surprise.

What happens if it rains during our proposal?

A little rain doesn't automatically mean your session is ruined. Jordan's proposal happened during overcast and lightly rainy conditions, and those elements ended up contributing to some of my favorite photographs from the session.

Can we take engagement photos immediately after the proposal?

Absolutely. I love transitioning directly from the surprise proposal into an engagement session. The excitement is real, the emotions are fresh, and you don't have to recreate that newly-engaged feeling for the camera.

How far in advance should I book a proposal photographer?

More notice gives us additional time to plan, but don't assume it's too late just because your proposal is approaching. Jordan contacted me only a few days beforehand, and I happened to have availability. Reach out and ask.

Looking for a Carlsbad or San Diego Proposal Photographer?

Jordan's Tamarack State Beach proposal is proof that you don't need perfect weather, an elaborate setup, or months of planning to create incredible proposal photographs.

You need the person you love, a meaningful plan, and someone ready to capture what happens next.

The clouds rolled in. It sprinkled. The waves nearly took us out.

And somehow, every bit of it made this session more beautiful.

This was easily one of my favorite sessions to date, and I absolutely adore the way their story came to life through these photographs.

If you're planning a surprise proposal in Carlsbad or San Diego, I'd love to help you plan the photography, scout the location, and quietly be there when you ask one of the biggest questions of your life.
